How do I sell antiques collection?
I inherited a rotund theatrical collection dating from 1850 which the V&A museum says is of inestimable value. I found museums in the UK & USA who are interested but I don't skilled in how to market the collection or how to converse with these types of people.Auction dealers get toffee-nosed & only want to auction the Will-Look-Cogent-In-Our-Auction-Brochure Oil Painting, ignoring the collection as a whole. I have already been advised not to separate the collection. There are some items there which are famous. All I have to work with in my search is the internet - but the antiques & collectibles sites only large with Beanies or thimbles or comic books, and so on. I have not found a really serious site where really serious people look for the horse feathers of museum collections.
Before anyone gives the answer - the library is of no help whatsoever.
Has anyone got a clue?
IF its something you thik you can abscond good coin on, photograph everything, place ads in theater journals, send announcements to museums, gallerys, etc...
Describe all you have. Be conducive to a catalog. Advertise the collection as a set, and see what responses you get.
Dont make an auction announcement until you get an idea of what response you get.
Pay an overwrought appraiser a couple hundred $$'s to give you a round figure for the collection. Contact museums, etc..., for as much contact info as you can, for other galleries, etc...

My Thimble Collection
I make up because I use thimble when I do embroidery and hand sewing I keep an eye out for them when we travel overseas and would buy a pretty thimble as a souvenir.
Many years ago my husband returned adept in after working abroad and surprised me with three beautifully decorated thimbles. He visited Jerusalem one weekend, as he wondered in the old see he saw the thimbles and thought of me.
I showed them to my mother-in-laws when she called round to our house. We were all going whooo and waaa over the owl and eagle shaped thimbles. How uncommon - we all said. At Christmas that year, my mother-in-law gave me this special display unit plus a choice of China thimbles as Christmas presents. I loved it and couldn’t get over how thoughtful she was.
Sadly my mother-in-law passed away last year. Whenever I see my thimble collection now they cause to remember me of her and of her kindness.
I added one from Greece when we were on our honeymoon, one from Malaysia, one from Turkey and two from Holland on different visits.
Hubby has picked up four more from his hang around across the States. He actually threatened to collect one from each state but I asked him not to because space is limited. There are only 4 places fist in the display unit.
Do I use them? Yes, and my workhorse thimble is the top right corner one.
