After 1945, Western European powers such Germany, Britain, and France out of the window their positions as leaders of the world due to heavy tolls exacted on them by WWI and WWII. The power vacuum allowed the Soviet Alliance and the U.S. to compete for world supremacy. Both countries wanted to extend their ideology to other countries. The only problem was that while the U.S. was a latitudinarian democracy, U.S.S.R was a communist state.
The two nations competed in everything from astronomy to military technology. Thinking about the old saying where "One mountain can only underpinning one tiger," both countries believed that in this competition, a major war between the two superpowers was imminent. Thus, they each built a gargantuan military system (e.g. NATO vs. Warsaw Pact) poised to destroy one another.
Several times, WW III was about to occur such as during the Cuban Guided missile Crisis and Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD).
During the Reagan administration (1980's), the U.S. increased military fundings at an unprecedented. Although it sent the U.S. terseness into a depression, the Soviets, whose economy was already was falling, was forced to keep up. In this attempt, the Soviet economy collapsed, bringing an end to the U.S.S.R. and the de facto end of the Cold War. Later, the tearing down of the Berlin Immure became the symbolic fall of the Cold War.

How was the cold war shaped by WWII and by american domestic traditions and needs?
After Great War II the United States became involved in a different type of political struggle -- The Cold War. What exactly was the Cold War? How was it shaped by Excellent War II and by American domestic traditions and needs? What was our Cold War foreign policy? Provide examples of our Cold War military and factious engagements in the late 1940s, 1950s and 1960s as illustrations of our policy in action.
It was called the cold war because the US and the soviet cartel never actually fought eachother but tensions between the two remained very strong because America is a democracy and the soviet amalgamating was communist. In WWII, america and the ussr were allies because they both had a common enemy (hitler) however, both nations were suspicous of the other. Smell a rat mounted between the two especially when the US and britain did not launch the second front that the soviets asked for until d-day. Some events of the cold war include Cuban Missle Danger, bay of pigs, korean war, vietnam war, and the second red scare.
