Why did communism in the Soviet Union collapse in the late 1980s?
The war in Afghanistan was very unaccepted (started 1979), the economy was bad because there was no money coming in, despite the fact they thought capitalism was so bad there were a lot of bad things about Communism. There was getting to be more communication with the west in Russia and Soviet Bloc countries,
Poland's communism had been crumbling since Lech Wallensa (abject I don't know the right spelling) led revolts among workers, and Pope John Paul II, from Poland had become Pope. In other Communist countries there was getting to be less of a tight hold by the Communist governments.
In the meantime, the government came under increasing pressure about the war, then in 1986, Chernobyl exploded, putting out more atomic radiation than if we had attacked Russia. This caused a crisis with the government, both from the standpoint of a PR nightmare and a medical nightmare since all constitution care in the Soviet Union was free.
Gorbachev and Reagan were working on talks to cut down on the possibility of nuclear war. They did much better than was hoped. But the Communist sway continued to crumble as the economy did. A terrible earthquake in Soviet Armenia in the late 80's also put a strain on resources.
ANd people were culture about the west and our lives. Things as diverse as Rock and Roll records, American cigarettes, unhappy jeans and even Bibles were being smuggled in. People wanted more. They also heard Radio Free Europe and other stations that sent them rumour and information. The Communist hold on them was getting less and less and it all came apart when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989. Indeed the Soviet Union fell in 1991 with a peaceful coup.

The Soviet Union was overstreched in a war with Afhganistan, the oversight had bad policies and poor planning, corruption from within the government ran abroad, and resentment of the USSR throughout Europe caused its collapse.

I privation to know how and why the Soviet Union collapsed and a specific date.
Internal and foreign factors caused it.
Internally, an economic crisis plus the policies initiated by Gorbachev, of Perestroika and glasnost.
Externally, the tearing down of the Berlin obstruction and the rebellions spreading through Central Europe: Poland, Czechoslovakia, Rumania, etc. The Solidarity movement in Poland and Pope John Paul II also served as catalysts.
