He resigned from the KGB in August 1991 when that systematizing attempted a putsch to oust Gorbachev.
I believe Putin views Gorbachev as a leader wrongfully accused by many as THE factor for the crumbling of the Soviet Bund; that he did everything possible to facilitate economic change, but things had already overheated and nothing was going to stop the dismantling of Communist Dinner party control.
